Accessibility & Facilities

Wieliczka Salt Mine is a historic underground mine, which means it presents real challenges for accessibility — but it has invested meaningfully in making parts of the experience available to visitors with reduced mobility. Whether you’re planning around a wheelchair, limited fitness, travelling with very young children, or simply want to know where the toilets are, here’s the complete picture.

Wheelchair Access & Limited Mobility

Part of the Tourist Route is accessible to wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility, but must be booked in advance via rezerwacja@kopalnia.pl. The Miners’ Route is not accessible. On-site facilities include free luggage lockers, toilets at three locations, ATMs, card-accepting shops and restaurants, and free Wi-Fi in selected chambers.

A section of the Tourist Route — specifically level 2 (chambers 3–7) and the underground Cracow Saltworks Museum exhibition on level 3 — is adapted for visitors with impaired mobility. These sections are free of stairs or are equipped with wheelchair transport facilities.

Key details for wheelchair visitors:

  • Entrance used: Daniłowicz Shaft (for the adapted Tourist Route section)
  • Wheelchair width limit: Must not exceed 59 cm
  • Companion required: Visitors with mobility difficulties must be accompanied by an attendant at all times
  • Tour language: Adapted tours are available in Polish or English only
  • Timing: Adapted tours take place during the first and last opening hours of the day only (Monday–Sunday)
  • Advance booking is mandatory: Contact the mine at rezerwacja@kopalnia.pl or by telephone to reserve a place — the number of participants per adapted tour is limited
  • Ticket concession: Visitors who can provide documentation confirming a disability may be eligible for a reduced ticket price; one companion may also receive a concession

The Regis Shaft also has lifts between levels and offers step-free entry, primarily used for the Miners’ Route and accessible tour variations. Wheelchair users should contact the mine directly to confirm which arrangement is most appropriate for their needs.

Part of the Tourist Route is adapted for wheelchair users, but must be booked in advance. Adapted tours run during the first and last opening hours each day, are available in Polish or English, and require a companion. Wheelchair width must not exceed 59 cm. Contact rezerwacja@kopalnia.pl to book.

The Miners’ Route — Not Accessible

The Miners' Route is not suitable for visitors with mobility impairments, wheelchair users, or anyone with limited physical fitness. It involves steep ladder climbs, narrow passageways, and physically demanding tasks. Minimum participant age is 10 years.

Assistance and Guide Dogs

Registered assistance dogs and guide dogs for blind or visually impaired visitors are permitted inside the mine. Other animals are not allowed underground.

Families with Young Children

Strollers and pushchairs cannot be taken underground on the Tourist Route. The mine lacks appropriate storage for them, and the stairs and narrow passages make them impractical. A baby carrier is the recommended alternative for infants and very young children.

Children of any age are welcome on the Tourist Route. Children under 4 enter free of charge. Reduced-price tickets are available for children aged 4–16 with valid documentation.

Changing facilities for infants are available at Karczma Górnicza, the underground restaurant on level 3, and child-friendly seating is provided there. See our Wieliczka Salt Mine Restaurant guide for more.

Luggage Storage

Only carry-on luggage with maximum dimensions of 35x20x20 cm is permitted underground. Larger bags, rucksacks, and suitcases must be left in automated luggage lockers on the surface near the Daniłowicz Shaft. Luggage storage is free of charge during touring hours.

Important caveats: lockers are limited in number and size, and availability cannot be guaranteed — especially on busy summer weekends. If you’re travelling with large bags, arrive early or arrange storage elsewhere. Do not leave luggage unattended on the mine premises as unattended items are treated as a security concern.

Toilets

Toilet facilities are available at three locations:

  1. Surface level — near the Daniłowicz Shaft, before entering the mine
  2. Underground level 1 — your guide will indicate the stop
  3. Underground level 3 — near the Karczma Górnicza restaurant area

One toilet adapted for visitors with disabilities is available. Use surface facilities before starting the tour if possible, as underground toilet stops are brief and timed.

ATMs and Payment

ATMs and currency exchange facilities are located on the surface near the Daniłowicz Shaft. All catering outlets, retail shops, and the underground restaurant accept card payments (American Express, VISA, Mastercard, VISA Electron, Maestro). There is no need to carry cash specifically for the mine.

Wi-Fi and Mobile Signal

Mobile signal underground is essentially non-existent across the vast majority of the Tourist Route. Free Wi-Fi is available in a small number of chambers. Download your tickets, maps, translation apps, and any reference material before going underground — do not rely on connectivity.

Shops and Souvenirs

The mine has several retail outlets:

  • Main souvenir shop (surface, entrance level) — salt lamps, carved figurines, bath salts, books, and miner-themed collectibles
  • Underground boutique (on the Tourist Route, post-tour area) — exclusive salt-crystal ornaments and handmade crafts not sold at the surface shop
  • Second surface shop (near the lift exit) — accessible after the tour
  • Wellness shop — skin and spa products made from Wieliczka salt

An underground post office point allows visitors to send a postcard from 135 metres below ground — a popular novelty.

Parking for Visitors with Disabilities

Two dedicated disabled parking spaces are located on Dembowskiego Street, available free of charge. The main car parks (Tężnia and Daniłowicz) are otherwise paid. See our Map guide for full parking information.
